Garananga Step Up To Join Danish Giants FC Copenhagen

Zimbabwe Warriors Central defender Munashe Garananga made another sudden leap in his career after completing a long-term move to Danish giants FC Copenhagen from Belgian side KV Mechelen.

The 23-year-old Zimbabwean who joined the Belgian side at the beginning of the year, signed a four year contract with FC Copenhagen after an impressive short stint in the Belgian pro league.

Garananga made a quick impact at Mechelen creating a formidable combination on the right side of the pitch with compatriot Bill Antonio. He eventually played 16 games for the yellow-red.

Speaking to the club media on Garananga’s departure KV Mechelen Sporting Director Tim Matthys said he knew Garananga would be a huge attraction to a lot of big clubs in Europe.

“When you attract a boy with a lot of potential, you know that there will come a certain moment when he will expand his wings,” says Sporting Director Tim Matthys.

“It is not really surprising that it comes so quickly. I knew that if Munashe adapted quickly, he would very quickly attract the interest of bigger clubs. That quickly became clear when he played a few games for us.”

“I am very proud of Munashe for being able to take this step and am happy that we can give him a stage to showcase his talent. I wish him the best of luck.”

Garananga has been on a quick rise ever since he left Ubuntu Cape Town to join Belarusian side Dynamo Brest. From Brest he moved on to Moldova’s Sherriff Tiraspol where he spent a season before joining KV Mechelen, all in a space of four years.

Copenhagen are the highest Scandinavian club in the UEFA team rankings.

The club has won a shared record 15 Danish Football Championships and a shared record 9 Danish Cups.

In European football F.C. Copenhagen has reached the group stage of the UEFA Champions League and the group stage of the UEFA Europa League  more times than any other Danish club and are the only club from that country to reach the knockout stage of the Champions League.
