Cephas Chimedza’s Best Zimbabwe Warriors XI
Former Zimbabwe Warriors versatile midfielder Cephas Chimedza made a name for himself through his impressive playing career that took him from Dynamos and Caps United in the local league to as far as Belgium where he represented teams such as Germinal Beerschot, Sint-Truidense, Westerlo, Cappellen and Willebroekse SV before he hanged his boots in 2018.
Recently, the Belgian-based Chimedza took the opportunity to name his best Zimbabwe Warriors eleven, a lineup that showcases the talent he had the privilege of playing alongside during his career.
What stands out in Chimedza’s selection is his surprising decision to omit himself from the team. This speaks volumes about his humility and respect for the players he shared the pitch with. His chosen eleven is a blend of skill, experience, and tactical awareness, reflecting the golden era of Zimbabwean football.
In goal, Chimedza selected Gift Muzadzi, a reliable shot-stopper known for his quick reflexes and commanding presence in the box. The right-back position is filled by George Mbwando, whose tenacity and defensive prowess made him a formidable opponent. On the left flank, Charles Yohane, a player celebrated for his attacking instincts and defensive capabilities, provides balance to the backline.
The central defense is anchored by the duo of Dickson Choto and Dumisani Mpofu. Choto, known for his aerial ability and leadership, pairs well with Mpofu, whose physicality and tactical awareness made him a key figure in the Warriors’ defense.
In midfield, Chimedza opted for a dynamic pairing of Edelbert Dinha and Johannes Ngodzo. Dinha, with his vision and passing range, complemented Ngodzo’s work rate and ability to break up opposition play, creating a solid foundation for the team.
On the wings, Chimedza selected two of Zimbabwe’s most talented players: Peter Ndlovu on the left and Joel Luphahla on the right. Ndlovu, often regarded as one of the greatest Zimbabwean players, brought flair and creativity, while Luphahla’s pace and dribbling skills added width and attacking threat.
At the heart of the attack, Chimedza chose Shingirai Kawondera as the playmaker. Kawondera’s ability to create chances and link up play made him a vital cog in the Warriors’ offensive setup. Finally, leading the line is the prolific striker Benjani Mwaruwari, whose goal-scoring record and experience in top leagues around the world made him a natural choice for the role.

Chimedza’s selection reflects not only his appreciation for the talents of his former teammates but also his insightful reflections on the game and his teammates.
