Chipezeze And Chirambadare Inspire Victory As Magesi Stun Sundowns To Win Cup Final
South Africa’s Betway premier league newcomers Magesi F.C came back from a goal down to stun league giants Mamelodi Sundowns 2-1 and lift the R6,6 million Carling black label knock-out trophy for the first time as goalkeeper Elvis Chipezeze and forward Edmore Chirambadare played key roles to inspire the victory.
The former Zimbabwe Warriors Goalkeeper Elvis Chipezeze (34) bagged his fourth man of the match gong in the Carling black label knock-out competition after another top-notch performance making five crucial saves as he stood firm to deny Sundowns a win.
However, the defending champions broke the deadlock with Iqraam Rayners’ goal in the 36th minute to breach Chipezeze’s goal only for the third time in this competition.
Chirambadare, the 32-year-old former Kaizer Chiefs forward then capped off an outstanding individual display by providing two fantastic crosses in the box that resulted in Magesi’s two goals.
The first cross was a direct assist as Kakora headed home in the 48th minute to equalize the scores, and the second came from a corner kick flicked by Darpoh before Abrahams fired home in the 89th minute to stun Masandawana 2-1 and claimed the formerly Telkolm Knockout trophy for the first time in the team’s history.
Chipezeze is now the only second player to win four Man Of The Match awards worth R400 000 in the history of the competition, equaling Iqraam Rayners, who achieved the feat last season with Mamelodi Sundowns.
It is Chipezeze’s second knock-out trophy after first lifting the cup in the 2018/19 season with another underdog team Baroka F.C. and Chirambadare’s first silverware in the premiership.
