Tavonga Kuleya Signs First Professional Contract With Doncaster Rovers

Another English Zimbabwean youngster coming up the English football ranks, winger Tavonga Kuleya has been offered a two year contract with Skybet League two side Doncaster Rovers, the club has confirmed.

The 18-year-old former youth-academy player who was born in England of Zimbabwean descent, spent pre-season with the club after recovering from shoulder surgery, which delayed Rovers’ decision on offering him a deal.

He has been with the club since the age of 14 and has made his full debut for the senior team against Scunthorpe United in the Papa John’s Trophy in November and assisted Rodrigo Vilca’s opening goal in a 3-2 win.

He also featured as a second half substitute in the same competition against Crewe Alexandra

Kuleya has impressed Rovers’ boss Gary McSheffrey ever since he joined preseason training after recovering from a successful shoulder surgery.

Gary McSheffrey who also managed Kuleya in the youth academy praised the youngster for his hard work and resilience to get where he is.

“He’s put a lot of hard work in to get into the position he’s in now, he’s come in during pre-season and really impressed,” said McSheffrey

JHe has got something different to others. When I had him in the U18s I challenged him all the time to add more goals and assists to his game.

He’s very exciting on the eye and physically he’s developing well. In a couple of years, I can see him being a strong, physical, fast man.”

Kuleya becomes McSheffrey’s ninth signing of the summer transfer window.

He is among a number of youngsters with Zimbabwean roots coming up the English football ranks and with proper harnessing and good management, Zimbabwe could become one of the best football powerhouses in the world.
