Munetsi Off The Mark At Wolves As He Becomes The First Zimbabwean To Score In The EPL In Over A Decade
Nyasha Marshall Munetsi scored his first Premier League goal for Wolverhampton Wanderers in a 1-1 draw against Everton on Saturday night marking a significant milestone for Zimbabwe Football as he became the first Zimbabwean to find the back of the net in the English Premier League since Benjani Mwaruwari in 2011.
The 28-year-old who has since become influential as an attacking midfielder at Wolverhampton Wanderers, calmly slipped in a goal after a superb pass from Jean-Ricner Bellegarde.
Munetsi’s 40th-minute goal not only restored parity for Victor Pereira’s side who had fallen behind when Jack Harrison gave Everton the lead in the 33rd minute but moved Wolves six points clear of the drop zone edging them closer to Premier League safety.
The Zimbabwean came off at the beginning of the second half for Pablo Sarabia after a suspected injury, but his goal was enough to earn Wolves the valuable point in a cagey encounter.
The goal is Munetsi’s first after three starts in four premier league matches since joining on the 3rd of February 2025 from Stade Reims. And according to Premier League statistics, It is also the first goal in the league by a Zimbabwean since former Manchester City, Portsmouth, and Blackburn Rovers forward Benjani Mwaruwari who last scored in the English top flight on 5 January 2011 when he scored two goals for Blackburn Rovers in a 3-1 win against Liverpool at Ewood Park.
