Nyoni In Line For His First Competitive Liverpool Senior Appearance

Teenage star Trey Nyoni could be handed his first competitive Liverpool senior appearance as the Reds clash against WestHam in the Carabao Cup third-round tie on Wednesday night.

The 17-year-old breakout star who made his senior Liverpool debut against Southampton in February before an impressive preseason camp with the senior squad was not included in under-21s squad that lost to Harrogate in the EFL cup on Tuesday as Liverpool manager Arne Slot targets to use the youngster in the Carabao cup third-round tie against fellow premier league side West Ham.

Slot had hinted earlier that “there is a fair chance,” Nyoni could play against West Ham if he doesn’t feature for the under-21s EFL cup tie on Tuesday, and the youngster didn’t travel with the U21s putting himself straight in line for a first senior competitive debut for Liverpool.

“He needs playing time to develop and that’s why sometimes as a manager you might feel like, ‘oh, we might need him with the first team’, said Slot as quoted by Sam Millne in This Is Anfield.

“The way I look at it now, there would be a fair chance for him to be in our squad,  but it all depends on how fit the other players are.”

Ever since his impressive performances with the senior team during the past preseason training Liverpool fans have been eager to see more of the youngster

But, Slot has emphasised the need for a gradual integration to the first team for the talented teenager and not to rush his development.

He’s a young player, really young, only just became 17 but with a lot of talent that had some impact in pre-season, and when he played against Sevilla, he even scored a goal.

“So, a talent but only being a talent is not enough to play on a regular basis in the first team so we need to keep developing him.

Nyoni’s swift rise through the club’s set up speaks volumes about his potential. The youngster with Zimbabwean roots made the move from Leicester to Liverpool, quickly adapting to the more competitive environment of the under-18 squad. He is currently part of the Under-21 side.
