Kelvin Lunga Ready For The New Challenge After Leaving Straelen
German-born Zimbabwe international forward Kelvin Lunga is eager for the new challenge after leaving SV Straelen to join Rot-Weiss Oberhausen at the end of the Regionalliga west 2021-22 season.
The 27-year-old Zimbabwe Warriors prospective forward is moving from league rivals SV Straelen who finished 15th on the log last season to fourth finish Oberhausen.
Lunga only spent a season at Straelen and scored five goals in 37 appearances for the club in all competitions.
His highlight at Straelen includes winning the Lower Rhine cup in May 2022 and qualify the team to the DFB-Pokal cup, which is the biggest knock-out competition in Germany football.
The well-traveled forward has been to more than nine clubs in the German’s lower leagues including the Middle Rhine (third tier) clubs such as FC Hennef, Germania Windeck and FC Köln U21.
Lunga has made a name for himself in the Regionalliga west (fourth tier) with Bonner SC, SV Rödinghausen, Fortuna Cologne and SV Bergisch Gladbach 09 before joining Straelen at the beginning of 2021-22 season.
He has played 137 regional west league games so far in his career scoring 21 goals and providing 26 assists in the process.
“Kelvin is in the best footballing age and has a certain amount of experience,” says Oberhausen’s sporting director Peter Bauder speaking to the club website.
“With his athleticism, he will ensure proper operation on our flanks.”
Lunga seems to have settled seamlessly at his new home after opening his scoring account for Oberhausen during the preseason training and is looking forward to kick start the season on a front foot when they open the league with a date against Alemannia Aachen on Friday 22 July 2022.
“I’m taking the next step in my development with this traditional club, ” said Lunga
I’ve often been a guest at the Niederrhein stadium and was able to feel the force of the back goal grandstand. This time all these fans are on my side. That pushes me even more. I want to do my part to ensure that we have a lot of fun together.”
The former SV Rödinghausen striker, who set foot on Zimbabwean soil for the first time when he came to join the national squad in 2019 ahead of the Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers against Congo has already pledged his alligiance with the Zimbabwe Warriors.
Although he is still to make his debut for the national team, Lunga expressed his desire to have a long successful international career with Zimbabwe and surpass his father Max Makanza Lunga, who played for Zimbabwe in the 1990s.
