Darikwa Opens His Goal Scoring Account In Cypriot Top Division

Zimbabwe Warriors’ minister of defence Tendayi Darikwa will be hoping to build on his current form as he bagged his first goal for Apollon Limassol in their 1-all draw against APOEL on Sunday.

The 31-year-old former Wigan Athletic right back scored the equaliser with a close-range strike in the first half stoppage time after the home team took the lead through Petrovic’s header on 31st minutes. The match ended on a 1-1 draw.

The goal is Darikwa’s first in the Cypriot first division league after joining the club in June 2023 from Wigan Athletic on a free transfer. He has started in all four league matches played by the club so far helping them to seventh position with six points from four games.

The right-back defender was a mainstay in Latics’ starting XI in the second half of the 2020-21 season and played a crucial role as Richardson’s men survived from relegation. After making his debut in the 3-3 draw at Rochdale in January, the Zimbabwe international went on to make a further 25 league appearances for Latics, helping the defence provide a solid platform to push towards safety.

Darikwa who was born in England has spent his entire career in the country playing for Chesterfield, Burnley, Nottingham Forest and Wigan, making over 350 appearances in League Two, League One and the Championship.

He has thirteen international caps with the Zimbabwe Warriors after making his debut on 8 November 2017 in a friendly defeat to Lesotho.
